Teaching Philosophy

"Dont invent, discover. You can see the whole world in a drop of water" Jacques Lecoq

My teaching is inspired by the creative pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq. The aspect of Lecoq's teaching that has most informed my own teaching practice is the emphasis his pedagogy places on   looking outwards -  allowing the world, its rhythms, its dramas, its perfect comedies, to make an 'impression'. Being 'impressed', is an important and nourishing, yet often overlooked, step in the journey towards 'expression'.

For myself as an artist, it is in the studio and classroom that I feel closest to the best elements of theatre as an art form ⎯ discipline combined with playfulness; limited means yet an unlimited capacity to discover and invent; the pursuit of the unknown in a world that privileges the known. Regardless of age or experience level, performers take a risk when they step on stage. My job as a teacher  is to keep all artists, in close contact with this capacity to risk and to be brave - to help them to embrace risk, failure, and productive ‘mistake’ making as the everyday stuff of art, and indeed life. To this end, I aim to create a teaching environment filled with laughter, poetry and effort and focus on possibility over correctness.
